Delta Comfort Plus, now called Delta Comfort, is Delta’s extra-legroom economy product. Paying more than you would for Delta Main, the airline’s standard economy product, is easiest to justify when you’ll actually use the extra space. Three things are important to consider here: how long you’ll fly, which Comfort fare you pick, and how big the price gap is on your route.

The shorter name arrived alongside a longer list of choices. You’ll see Classic and Extra fares, plus Basic on certain flights. Those labels change the ticket rules, so choosing the cheapest Comfort option deserves a closer look.

Here’s how to compare the seat, the restrictions, and the total cost before you pay for the upgrade.

What Delta Comfort Plus is and how to read Delta’s new booking labels

Delta Comfort Plus gives you an economy seat with more space between rows, along with earlier boarding and dedicated overhead storage. Delta shortened the name to Delta Comfort as part of a broader update to how it labels seat products and ticket options during booking.

Delta introduced the update on May 15, 2025, for travel beginning October 1, 2025, from the US and Canada. Main Cabin became Delta Main, First Class became Delta First, and Basic Economy became a fare option within Delta Main called Main Basic.

To understand the booking choices, read the seat name and fare label together. “Comfort” identifies the extra-legroom section, while “Basic,” “Classic,” or “Extra” identifies the ticket conditions, including seat selection, ticket changes, and refunds. You can spot these tickets by their booking class codes: W and S. Keep in mind that other airlines use these same letters for different cabins or fares.

With so many new labels in Delta’s booking flow, it’s easy to confuse its extra-legroom seats with similar products from other airlines. “Delta Economy Plus” is a common example: Economy Plus is United’s extra-legroom product, with its own benefits and ticket rules. When booking with Delta, the name to look for is Delta Comfort.

Delta Comfort perks: legroom, boarding, bin space, and free drinks

Delta Comfort’s main benefits are extra legroom, Zone 3 boarding, dedicated overhead bin space, and free beer, wine, and spirits on flights of 350 miles (563 km) or more.

How much legroom do Delta Comfort seats add?

The extra legroom in Delta Comfort varies by aircraft and row. Delta measures that difference using seat pitch, the distance between matching points on successive seats. It shows how far apart the rows are, rather than the exact space in front of your knees.

The two configurations below illustrate this variation: Comfort has 33 inches of pitch on the Airbus A220-100 and 33–34 inches on certain Boeing 757-200 configurations. Compared with their standard Main rows, that adds 1–3 inches.

AircraftDelta Comfort pitchDelta Main pitch
Airbus A220-10033 inches30–32 inches
Boeing 757-200, 75D configuration33–34 inches31–32 inches

Delta lists the same seat width for Comfort and Main on both configurations, so the upgrade adds room between rows without a wider seat. These examples don’t cover the whole fleet; check the specifications for the aircraft assigned to your flight.

Boarding and overhead bins in Delta Comfort

All three Comfort fares include Zone 3 boarding, ahead of the standard boarding zones for Delta Main, although some Main passengers board earlier through status or other eligibility. Dedicated overhead bins provide storage within the Comfort section, and its forward position also helps you leave the aircraft sooner.

What food, drinks, and entertainment does Delta Comfort offer?

As of October 2026, Delta lists these inclusions:

  • Complimentary Starbucks coffee for everyone, plus beer, wine, and spirits for passengers aged 21 and over on flights of 350 miles (563 km) or more
  • Premium snacks on many routes over 900 miles (1448 km) when meal service isn’t available
  • Complimentary earbuds for the Delta Studio entertainment system, with screens and equipment varying by aircraft

Does Delta Comfort include a checked bag or Sky Club access?

Delta Comfort doesn’t automatically include a free checked bag on US domestic flights or admission to a Delta Sky Club. As of October 2026, standard domestic bag charges are $45 for the first bag and $55 for the second, each way, unless an exemption applies.

Those charges match Delta Main. For a round-trip flight, one checked bag adds $90 to either ticket; paying for Comfort won’t remove that expense.

Medallion members and eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express cardholders check their first bag for free, and active-duty military members have their own allowance. Card benefits differ, so check your allowance before adding bag fees to your comparison. Delta’s baggage page lists the current charges and exceptions.

To enter a Sky Club lounge, you need a membership, a qualifying credit card, or another accepted credential, and visit limits still apply.

Comfort Basic has one useful distinction here: it permits entry with qualifying credentials. Main Basic excludes Sky Club access even when you hold those credentials. If you already have lounge access, this is a reason to pick Comfort Basic over Main Basic.

Delta Comfort Classic vs. Comfort Extra vs. Comfort Basic: what each fare changes

Delta Comfort Classic includes advance seat selection and, on US-origin tickets, changes without a change fee and cancellation for an eCredit. Comfort Extra adds refundability to your original payment method. With Comfort Basic, seats are assigned after check-in, and changing or canceling your ticket comes with a fee.

All three fares offer the same Comfort seats and include the same onboard service. The table below compares the main conditions for US-origin bookings.

What restrictions apply to mileage earning and same-day changes?

The “eligible dollars” in the table above include the base fare and Delta’s own surcharges, but not government taxes and fees, so you earn miles on less than the full ticket price. Same-day confirmed changes cover travel within the 50 US states, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Standby isn’t available on flights to or from Canada. Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Medallion members skip the $75 confirmed-change fee on Classic.

For fixed plans, Basic offers a way to pay for the space while accepting less control over seat assignment. Classic is the better pick when you need a particular seat or expect to use a future travel credit. Pick Extra when you need canceled travel refunded as money.

Plans can change after you book: a meeting moves, a family event shifts, or you simply need to fly a day earlier. Ovago’s flexible ticket lets you change your flight date or time without extra fees, so you pay only any fare difference.

Delta Main vs. Delta Comfort: the price difference and what it buys

Delta Comfort has no fixed price over Delta Main: the difference depends on your flight, date, and fare tier, and at each tier the upgrade changes more than the seat, adding mileage earning and Sky Club entry at the Basic level and earlier boarding at the Classic and Extra levels. Sales can shrink the price difference to almost nothing: in October 2026, Delta briefly offered Comfort upgrades on new Seattle bookings for $6 each way.

The same-tier comparison of Delta Main (formerly Main Cabin) and Delta Comfort looks like this:

Fare comparisonWhat changes beyond the seat
Main Basic vs. Comfort BasicComfort Basic earns miles and Medallion Qualification Dollars; Main Basic earns neither. Comfort Basic keeps Sky Club entry with your own credentials; Main Basic doesn’t.
Main Classic vs. Comfort ClassicBoth earn 5 miles per eligible dollar for general members. Standard boarding moves from Zone 6 for SkyMiles members, or Zone 7 for nonmembers, to Zone 3.
Main Extra vs. Comfort ExtraBoth earn 7 miles per eligible dollar for general members. Standard boarding moves from Zone 5 to Zone 3.

Status and eligible credit cards provide earlier boarding for some Main passengers. If you already board early, give that part of the Comfort package less weight.

Booking Delta Comfort now or upgrading later

You can buy Comfort with your ticket or purchase an available upgrade after booking an eligible fare. Check which segments the offer covers, especially on connecting itineraries. Paying for a Comfort upgrade changes your seat, not your fare rules, so the ticket doesn’t become refundable like Comfort Extra.

Main Basic is not eligible for paid or complimentary Comfort upgrades. Don’t buy it expecting to add the better seat later.

Medallion members can request complimentary Comfort upgrades on Classic and Extra tickets, award tickets included. Whether one clears depends on open seats and your place on the upgrade list.

Delta Comfort on international flights: what changes on long-haul routes

On long-haul international flights, Delta Comfort is still economy with extra legroom, plus a pillow, blanket, and amenity kit. The difference from domestic routes is that Delta Main already includes free meals and drinks on these flights, so the upgrade mostly pays for the extra space and the amenity kit.

Delta Main passengers also get a pillow and blanket on most long-haul international flights. If dinner, a glass of wine, or bedding is your main reason to upgrade, you’d be paying for something Main already includes.

Baggage needs a route-specific check. An international destination does not automatically mean a free checked bag: Delta lists charges on US routes to Canada, Mexico, and many Caribbean destinations. Check the allowance for your route with Delta’s bag-fee calculator before you compare fares.

If your main reason to pay more is sleeping better on an overnight flight, Delta Comfort isn’t your only option. Many Delta long-haul flights also offer Premium Select, Delta’s premium economy cabin, with a wider seat, deeper recline, and, on most aircraft, a leg rest and footrest.

When Delta Comfort Plus is worth it, and when Delta Main is enough

Delta Comfort is worth it on international flights when extra legroom is enough for you, and the surcharge fits your budget. Delta Main is the better place to save when you’re comfortable in the available seat and won’t use enough of Comfort’s benefits to justify paying more.

Your flight length, seating needs, and travel companions can be the main criteria to help you choose between them:

  • A short flight with a small bag: Start with Delta Main. If its seat feels adequate for a short hop and you don’t need Comfort’s dedicated overhead bin space, save the upgrade money for the trip itself. A small surcharge for Comfort may still be worthwhile if you want extra legroom, not the snacks: Comfort’s premium snacks start on flights over 900 miles.
  • A longer domestic flight: Give Delta Comfort more consideration. Extra space between rows can feel more valuable over five hours than on a short flight. Include Comfort’s complimentary alcoholic drinks in your comparison only if you would otherwise buy them in Main.
  • A tall traveler or someone planning to work: Compare Comfort and Main on your flight’s aircraft specifications and seat map. Comfort’s additional pitch gives your knees and an open laptop more room. Where both sections have the same seat width, however, paying for Comfort won’t give you more shoulder room.
  • A family or group: Compare available adjacent seats in both Delta Main and Delta Comfort before choosing. If sitting together is your main concern, Main Classic or Extra may meet your needs at a lower price. If you also want Comfort’s extra legroom, check its Classic or Extra fares. Basic fares in either section leave seat assignment until after check-in.
  • A Medallion member: If you hope to receive a complimentary upgrade from Delta Main to Delta Comfort, choose an eligible Main Classic or Main Extra fare. Main Basic isn’t eligible. Check whether your upgrade clears before paying for Comfort.
  • An overnight international flight: Choose Delta Comfort over Main if extra knee room is what you’re looking for. If you need a larger seat to rest comfortably, compare Comfort with Premium Select where available. Paying more than Main’s price for Comfort offers little value if you’ll still find the seat uncomfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included with Delta Comfort Plus?

Delta Comfort Plus, now sold as Delta Comfort, offers economy seats with additional space between rows, earlier boarding, and overhead storage dedicated to the section. On flights of 350 miles or more, Comfort passengers also get free beer, wine, and spirits. They also enjoy premium snacks on many flights longer than 900 miles. The Basic, Classic, and Extra labels determine booking flexibility and seat-selection rules. Check the assigned aircraft when comparing seats, since the dimensions and entertainment equipment differ across Delta’s fleet.

Do you get free drinks in Delta Comfort?

Yes, you get free drinks in Delta Comfort; they include beer, wine, and spirits for passengers 21 and older on flights of 350 miles or more. Soft drinks and Starbucks coffee come free as well. The perk matters most on domestic routes, where Delta Main passengers pay for alcohol. On long-haul international flights, Main serves beer, wine, and spirits for free too.

Does Delta Comfort Plus get you into a Delta Sky Club?

Delta Comfort Plus does not provide Sky Club admission as part of the ticket. You still need a Sky Club membership, a qualifying card, or another accepted credential, with its visit limits. Travelers on Comfort Basic can use those credentials; travelers on Main Basic can’t.

Is Delta Comfort the same as business class?

No, Delta Comfort isn’t a business-class cabin; it’s an economy product with more space between rows. Its seat width generally matches Main on the same aircraft, and this cabin does not provide a lie-flat bed. Delta’s business class is called Delta One, and it has lie-flat seats.

How is Delta Comfort different from Delta First?

Delta First tickets put you in a separate front cabin with wider seats, Sky Priority check-in and security, and up to two free checked bags. Comfort keeps an economy-style seat and standard baggage conditions but adds legroom, Zone 3 boarding, and free drinks on flights of 350 miles or more.

Is it worth upgrading from Delta Main to Delta Comfort?

Upgrading from Delta Main to Delta Comfort is usually worth it on longer domestic flights, for tall travelers, and for anyone planning to work on a laptop, since the extra space between rows makes the biggest difference there. It’s also an easy choice when a sale cuts the price difference to a few dollars. It’s less worth it on short flights, if you need a wider seat, since Comfort seats are the same width as Main, or on long-haul international routes, where Main already includes meals and drinks. Before deciding, multiply the price difference by every traveler and flight, and compare equivalent fare tiers: a cheap Comfort Basic fare still comes with restrictions that Main Classic doesn’t have.
