Long-haul flights in economy have always been an experience you can hardly call comfortable. For years, airlines focused on improving the seat itself, adding more recline, space, and cushioning. Yet for most travelers, especially in economy, proper sleep remains difficult to achieve on flights that last 12, 15, or even 16 hours.

Air New Zealand is now taking a different approach. Instead of focusing only on the seat, the airline is introducing Skynest, a separate sleep space that you can book for part of the flight. In this article, we will break down how Skynest works, which routes it will operate on, and how it compares to other seating options on long-haul flights.

What is Skynest and how does it work?

Air New Zealand Skynest is a sleep pod system designed for long-haul flights, not a new seat or cabin class. It gives economy and premium economy passengers access to a separate space where they can lie flat during part of the journey.

  • Design: The airline installed six individual lie-flat pods, called “nests,” inside a dedicated section of the aircraft. They are arranged in a stacked layout similar to bunk beds. Each pod measures 80 inches (203 cm) in length, with a width of 25 inches (64 cm) at the shoulders that narrows toward the feet. At its widest point, the overall sleeping space measures 23 inches (58 cm).
  • Access: It is limited to economy and premium economy passengers aged 15 and older. Each passenger can reserve one session per flight, and sessions are scheduled outside meal service to avoid interruptions. Thus, passengers spend most of the journey in their assigned seat and move to the Skynest area only during the allotted time.
  • Amenities: Inside the pod, each space comes prepared with a full-size pillow, fresh sheets, and a blanket, all changed between sessions. You also receive a small amenity kit, referred to as “Nestcessities,” which includes an eye mask, earplugs, socks, toothbrush and toothpaste, and Aotea hand cream.

Skynest routes, pricing, and availability

Air New Zealand will first introduce Skynest on its longest routes, starting with flights between New York (JFK) and Auckland (AKL). The product will be available on selected Boeing 787-9 V5 aircraft, where the sleep pods are installed between the economy and premium economy cabins.

Skynest is available as an optional add-on rather than as part of your ticket, so you have to book it separately. Each booking gives you a single four-hour session, and it is not possible to book multiple sessions per flight.

The cost is NZ$495 (US$292) for a single session. Bookings are set to open on May 18, with the first flights starting in November 2026.

Skynest guidelines: what to know before you use it

Because Skynest is a shared space, Air New Zealand provides a set of guidelines to keep the environment quiet, clean, and comfortable for everyone.

  • Keep the space quiet. Skynest is designed for rest, so noise should be kept to a minimum. Turn off device notifications and use headphones for any audio.
  • Use the pod as intended. Each pod is designed for one passenger. You cannot have any visitors there, and access is limited to passengers aged 15 and older.
  • Maintain cleanliness. Remove the shoes before entering the pod, and make sure your socks are clean. Food is not allowed inside, and you can only drink water. Also, avoid using perfume or any other strong fragrances in the pod.
  • Move carefully within the space. You should enter and exit quietly, use the ladders as intended, and remain aware that others may be resting nearby.
  • Follow safety instructions. Keep your seatbelt fastened over your blanket. This allows cabin crew to monitor safety conditions without needing to wake you if the seatbelt sign is activated.

Who should consider Skynest?

Skynest works best for travelers who prioritize sleep on ultra-long flights but do not want to upgrade to a premium cabin.

It makes the most sense if:

  • You struggle to sleep in a standard upright or reclined seat
  • You are flying ultra-long routes where even a few hours of uninterrupted rest can make a difference on arrival
  • You have some health issues that worsen if you sit for too long

Skynest adds $292 to your ticket, placing it between standard economy and a full cabin upgrade.

The differences become clearer when you compare Skynest with standard seating options:

How Skynest changes long-haul travel decisions

Skynest reflects a shift in how airlines approach long-haul comfort. Instead of committing to a full cabin upgrade, you can now adjust specific parts of the journey depending on your priorities without having to pay for a full upgrade.

If you are considering options like Skynest on long-haul routes, look beyond ticket prices. Сompare how different seat choices and add-ons affect your overall travel experience and the way you want to arrive at your destination.

Our Ovago experts can help you track price changes, evaluate route options, and identify flights where such add-ons are available, so you can choose what works best for your trip.
